I heard from too many people to count that it was the bravest (or dumbest) thing they'd ever heard to start your running career in Nashville, TN. So. Many. Hills. I was super anxious before the race even started and (confession) considered only doing part of it because - dang - 13.1 miles is a lot. On the way back to my corral, I passed a poster that said, "This seemed like a good idea 6 months ago" and I basically started bawling because I was certain this was the worst idea I'd ever had.
Things of note:
- I blew my pace in the first half of the race, so I pretty much died before the end of it.
- Hills SUCK all the ballz.
- People who stand along the route and cheer, clap, high five, and hold up signs are my equivalent of angels on earth. Seriously.
- I don't think I've ever been as mean to my friends as I was immediately following the race. Words like, "I f***ing hate this race sh*t. What the h*ll was I thinking?!" and "No. Don't smile at me. Stop it. No. NO SMILING." and so on. It was ug-gly. Rather, I was ugly. So very sorry to all those who experienced that. Not sure if it's legit but I'm going to go ahead and blame that on a mean case of the hangries.
- Half way through the race, I found myself behind a gal who's jersey said "I'm running today for all the people who can't run today" and I spent a good couple of miles feeling like the biggest jerk on the planet because I could run and I was taking it for granted and totally wishing I wasn't running... Ugh.
- My body seriously can't figure out what to do with itself ever since. I've eaten all the things, and I'm still hungry. It's been over a week. Is that normal?
I got my medal. I've bonded with other people in my life who do the running thing. I feel like I got a pass into an exclusive club. I think I'm thoroughly convinced that running is not my thing. But through it all, we raised $500 for St. Jude kiddos and that's the most important take way from the day! Thank you again for all the support and encouragement! Despite the tone of this post, I appreciate you all so much!
Then, there was a bachelorette party, a book club, then a wedding, and now a website is (almost) totally launched and we're moving into our new place in, like, 12 days, and it's almost my birthday and -whew- this is the life. Hold on tight!

congratulations! I am sure I would not be thrilled during at all either. But you did it, and that's a hell of a lot of money for St. Jude. And now you know, you never have to do one again if you don't want to! You won't be wondering for years... what if... etc. XO - Alexandra

Seriously, congrats on finishing! I don't think I could ever do it...unless I was walking at a leisurely pace and had all day. You should be proud, even if your mood wasn't stellar afterward. ;) Good luck with the move!!
ReplyDeleteWell huge congratulations on finishing, even through all the madness. Hills are definitely no joke, and I've been running on hills as long as I've been running! They're a unique challenge. But you did it and you can totally cross that off your bucket list and feel proud of the accomplishment!
ReplyDeleteYou ran hills? Lots of hills? I'll call you a rockstar any day. I probably would've sat on one of them and had people run around me, lol.
